Describe the garage entrance, not just the house
The City's 2013 nomination describes most district garages as detached, behind the home and reached by long driveways. It identifies alley access in the southern part east of South Kane Street. This is a historical survey, not a current description of every property.
Give the exact address, then explain whether the approach is from the street, a side driveway or an alley. Mention a shared drive, gate, tight turn or parked vehicle if it affects your property. Ask where the service vehicle should stop and whether the contractor needs any access arrangements before arriving.

Which project are you actually planning?
Replacing a faulty part, fitting a new door and altering the garage building are different scopes. Use the closest description below when requesting a visit. It helps avoid comparing a door-only proposal with one that includes construction work.
| Project | Clarify before approving work |
|---|---|
| Repair the existing door or opener | Describe the symptom and current door position. Ask what failed, which parts need replacement and what can remain. |
| Replace the door in the existing opening | Ask the installer to verify fit and state whether tracks, springs, seals, opener compatibility and removal of the old door are included. |
| Enlarge the opening, alter framing or add power | Ask who handles the building or electrical work, which approvals apply and whether those tasks are outside the door installer's proposal. |
Check the property before choosing an exterior change
Use the City's Kane Street district map to locate the property. The City also publishes a separate Historic Preservation Overlay District map and address list. Do not assume the two designations have identical boundaries or that a garage door has a particular approval requirement just because the home is described as historic.
Before ordering a different door style or changing the opening, send the City the address, a photograph of the existing exterior and a short description of the proposed work. Ask whether a permit, preservation approval or inspection applies, and who should submit it. Get the answer for the actual scope, not simply for 'garage work.'

If the detached garage is locked or inaccessible
Say at the start of the call if the garage door is stuck closed and there is no usable separate entrance. Do not pry it open or disconnect a damaged door to create access. Tell the contractor if a vehicle is trapped inside, but do not try to move it beneath a partly raised or leaning door.
Use photos and model details you already have or can obtain from a safe position. You do not need to enter an unsafe garage to prepare for the call. Confirm the receiving business's name, exact-address availability, visit charge and appointment window before agreeing to a visit.
