Troubleshooting

Garage Door Reverses Before Closing

An unexpected reversal is a symptom to investigate, not a reason to override the opener's protections. Note where the reversal happens and what you saw immediately beforehand. Repeated test cycles usually add less useful information than a clear account of the first failure.

The point of reversal is useful information

A door may reverse almost immediately, partway through travel, or near the floor. Describe the approximate position in plain language. If it only happens occasionally, note whether you were using the same control and whether the visible conditions at the opening were similar.

Do not claim a sensor is bad simply because the door reverses. The contractor needs to consider the door's movement and opener behavior together before proposing a part replacement.

Observe without defeating protection

Keep people and objects out of the opening and do not reach under a descending door. If ordinary belongings obstruct the area, move them only while the door is stationary and the location is safe. Do not touch the spring, cable, or track assembly.

Never bypass photo-eyes or increase operating force to make the symptom disappear. Use the manufacturer's manual for model-specific indications. If the door becomes crooked, binds, or develops an abrupt new noise, discontinue use rather than trying another setting.

Bring a short symptom history

A useful repair history separates observations from assumptions. For example, 'It starts closing from the wall button, then returns near the floor' is more informative than 'The motor is broken.' Mention any recent work, impact, or unusual noise and whether the issue existed before that event.

  • The control used and approximate reversal point.
  • Any displayed code or accessible indicator light pattern.
  • Whether the fault is intermittent or happens every time.
  • The date and scope of the most recent door or opener work, if known.

Confirm what the proposed repair will resolve

Ask the contractor to explain the cause found during inspection and the difference between any door repair and opener adjustment being proposed. The written scope should identify parts, labor, and applicable charges.

At completion, ask for a demonstration of normal operation and the manufacturer-required safety checks. Keep the equipment instructions and repair paperwork together so a recurring symptom can be compared with what was actually serviced, not just with the invoice total.
