Look at the opening without touching the mechanism
From a safe position, check whether ordinary stored items are in the door's path. Do not reach into tracks or stand under a partly open door to investigate. If the door is tilted, hanging unevenly, or has displaced hardware, leave it alone and request professional help.
Children and pets should stay away while the opening is unusable. If you cannot secure the garage, tell the call recipient clearly and ask what scheduling is actually available.
Record the closing pattern
A door that does nothing is different from one that descends and reverses. Note approximately where it stops, whether opener lights flash, and which control you used. Record an error code only if it is visible safely. Do not climb onto a vehicle or ladder beneath the door to read equipment.

Keep the safety systems active
Do not cover, relocate, disconnect, or bypass safety sensors to get a door shut. Do not change force or travel settings as a shortcut. Follow the opener's own instructions for user-level checks and have a technician investigate faults that remain.
Sensor indicators vary by model. A light color reported for one opener may mean something different on another. Photograph an accessible label or find the original manual so the repair discussion uses the correct equipment information.

Ask for a complete closing-system check
Explain whether the problem happens with every control or only the remote, keypad, or app. Mention recent impacts, new storage near the doorway, or an interruption in power as observations, not established causes.
Before accepting work, ask what the diagnosis found, whether the door mechanism also needs attention, and how normal closing and safety operation will be demonstrated afterward. Confirm charges and appointment details directly with the contractor rather than assuming an emergency visit is available.
